Niontay, "Da City of a Hunnid Plays"
New York-based rapper Niontay has been making waves through his unique and adaptive style. Blending an effortless, butter-smooth flow over high-tempo sample beats that are a clear nod to his Florida upbringing, he creates a velvet-like sound. His most recent project, Dontay’s Inferno, is a perfect compilation of earlier singles and new tracks, one being the soulful head-bopper “Da City of a Hunnid Plays,” the intro to the experimental project that is never a dull moment.
Skilla Baby, "Icky Vicky Vibes"
Detroit’s next superstar Skilla Baby will not stop until he’s a household name. After signing with Geffen Records last fall, Skilla Baby has had a busy 2023. He dropped a collab tape, Controversy, with Detroit veteran Tee Grizzley back in April and followed up with the deluxe version of his We Eat The Most EP back in June with 7 new tracks and features from G Herbo, BabyTron, Luh Tyler, and Rylo Rodriguez.
We got a chance to talk with Skilla at a recent conference by 1824°. Skilla looks at his ascension like a game of hopscotch: “The big goal at the end always takes steps before you get there.” This clarity so young in his career is bound to lead to greatness and is very on-brand when you look at the work he's put in at this point. He accredits being sober for the past few years to his recent uptick in volume and constant grinding, clearing his life of many distractions. “I know my goal, and nothing is gonna get in the way of that,” further emphasizing his mission to put on for his city.
Butch Dawson, "Face"
West Baltimore-native Butch Dawson is a talented artist and producer with endless range. The DMV has always been a melting pot of genreless musicians, and Dawson has followed suit drawing upon rap, R&B, jazz, and alternative sounds in his music. He has been consistently dropping since 2017 and has toured with artists like JPEGMAFIA and JELEEL! in the past. On his 2023 single “Face,” Dawson blends crooning melodies over a jazzy, percussive sample that leaves you wanting more.
AMAKA, "Cruisin'"
You may recognize Nigerian-born artist AMAKA from the R&B/pop duo VanJess comprised of her and her sister, Ivana Nwokike. Fast forward to 2023, and AMAKA has started off her solo career with a bang, releasing “Cruisin’” back in March of this year. Working with frequent collaborator KAYTRANADA, AMAKA creates a perfect summer track over the producer/DJ’s signature synth and bass-heavy production. AMAKA recently announced her debut EP, Oasis, a joint project with her and KAYTRANADA scheduled to release at the end of July 2023. She is definitely an artist to tap in to before it's too late.
LAYA, "F'd Up"
New York singer/songwriter LAYA demands the respect she deserves, and makes that very clear in her recent single, “F’d Up”. This is the first track from the Staten Island soul sensation since the release of her debut EP, Um, Hello, that dropped back in April 2022. LAYA silences the haters with her deep and passionate vocals that hit right to the soul over a very vibey and nostalgic dance instrumental. Her next project, Bet That, is highly anticipated and has us excited to hear what she’s been cooking up.
